Make disciples of all nations. Matthew 28:19
My wife, Sandee, and I have been involved in the Awana ministry for over fifteen years. We’ve had the privilege of serving as leaders and missionaries both in the US and overseas. Wherever we go, we have noticed that children have a care and great concern about the world they live in. While children in the U.S. seem to be interested in learning more about children overseas, the same seems to be true about children outside the US. Many children in the countries we have visited have lots of questions about kids in America. The natural interest of children provides a golden opportunity to teach them about sharing their faith with kids from other cultures.
This year I would like you to consider participating in the Awana Adopt-a-Club program during your Vacation Bible School. Through the Adopt-a-Club program, children can practice missions, stewardship and evangelism. The gifts from the children of your church will help children in another part of the world hear the good news of the gospel.
Spreading the gospel to the world and making disciples of all nations are two of the most important things a church can do. Jesus gave the church the great commission on five separate occasions. I encourage you to take a moment to read and reflect on these scripture verses: John 20:19-23; Mark 16:14-18; Matthew 28:16-20; Luke 24:46-49; and Acts 1:8. As adults we understand that we have a vital role in world missions. Children need to know that they too can have a role in evangelizing and discipling other nations.
Sandee and I have personally seen the benefits of teaching a child the importance of fulfilling the Great Commission. In 1998, we had the privilege of taking our children on a mission trip to Romania. Within two years of this trip, we moved our whole family to Budapest, Hungary to serve as missionaries to our national missionaries throughout Europe and former Soviet Union. We got to witness firsthand, the importance of “making disciples of all nations” and it gave our children the opportunity to be leaders and share with others what they had been taught. It was a great reminder to all of us that children are the future of the church. If the children are not reached with the gospel and taught to reach others, the church will not survive in future generations.
Thank you for partnering with Awana to fulfill our Lord’s marching orders to “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”. Matthew 28:19.
