Easter in Zimbabwe

Traditional vs Christ-centered Easter celebrations

Missionary in Zimbabwe

We thought of sharing with you how we celebrate Easter in Zimbabwe.

TRADITION: Those that believe in ancestral spirits they gather as a family all night, together with mediums celebrating for good harvest. It is because they believe that the good rains and bumper harvest come from ancestral spirit’s influence. To them Easter becomes a time of slaughtering a dedicated bull or he-goat. During the killing of one of these animals a possessed medium can jump at the neck of the killed animal and suck the blood and sprinkle some to the people gathering for cleansing purposes.

CHRISTIANITY: To children of God Easter means a lot. Songs and Hymns with Easter meanings are sung in churches and over the radio. A drama on the death and resurrection of our Lord is shown on television and heard over the radio. AWANA kids are involved in skits, songs and dramas.  Scriptures are recited by kids such as- “Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.”(1 Peter 1: 18-19).  “For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.”(Heb 10:4) “Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood--------“(Heb 9: 12) “---that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,(1 Cor 15:3-4) Many souls are ministered through the skits, songs and recitation of scriptures by kids.
